Abstract:
Surgical site infections or postoperative wound infections are a perennial and major problem in healthcare practice and can be ranked amongst the most frequent complications following surgery all over the world. They put patient at greater risk of suffering, prolong their length of hospital stay and also cause great strain financially on health systems and or budgets. Antibiotics used before surgery are quite useful in preventing SSIs since they help eliminate eventual pathogens during surgery. Yet, there is a dependency of timing and dosing, choice of the antibiotic, and patient’s conditions along with the presence of concurrent diseases or age.
This study had a prospective, non-interventional, attending surgeon, multi-center study enrolling 300 patients undergoing elective or emergency surgery. With regards to the antibiotic prescribing, the data was gathered according to the duration, the specific antibiotic used, and dosage; and the outcomes were then followed up to 30 days post-surgery. Epidemiological and econometric studies were used to compare the SSI rates when prophylactic antibiotics were used and when they were not, together with the costs of healthcare.
The present study highlights the appropriateness of time in the process which recorded the lowest infection rates among patients who received antibiotics within half an hour before the incision. Furthermore, the research also points to the enormous costs of chopping the rate of SSIs and bringing down the hospital days. The research also focuses on the expanding concerns such as AMR and offers data driven solutions as to how antibiotic utilization can be improved in the long Areas where the recommendations can be practical in surgical care practices.
