Talib Muhsin Hussein
A prospective study was conducted between January 2015 to January 2019 on 23 patients who were admitted to the Al-Zahraa Teaching Hospital in Wasit, Iraq 13 patients were females and 10 patients were males. For surgery of hydatid cyst with preservation of the spleen were followed up by serial abdominal ultrasound examinations at one monthly interval for a period of up to one year. The complications that have been encountered were infection in the cavity which happened in 6 patients (26.08%) two of them needed percutaneous aspiration of the pus with antibiotics cover. Two with bleeding which end with splenectomy. then 15 of them ended in complete involution of the cavity. Partial involution occurred in 6 (28.57%) of patients. Complete involution took place in (71.4%) of patients. Some were treated by enucleation plus omentoplasty others treated by enucleation plus simple closure plus external tube drainage. We observed that all recurrences occurred in patients with multiple hydatid cysts (liver and spleen) 8 patient out of the 23 had hydatid cyst of liver as well. All infections happened in patients treated by external drainage, those treated by omentoplasty generally took long time to completely involutes, otherwise complete involution take an average of 5.8 months to be established.
Aim of the study: A prospective study to follow up the fate of residual hydatid cysts cavities after preservative surgery on the spleen. This done by serial abdominal ultrasound examinations for a period of one year postoperatively.
