Abstract:

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with various physical, psychological and financial impact for the patients and their family. In cases where TBI has associated coagulopathy, it has significant impact on possibility of complications and mortality. This study was done to identify the association of coagulation profile on outcome among patients with traumatic brain injury.

Methods and Materials: An observational study was done among 130 patients who were divided into 2 groups based on Glascow Coma Scale as moderate and severe. Their coagulation profile and other related parameters were assessed and noted. The outcome was compared between the groups.

Results: Mean age and gender was similar between both the study groups. The mean values of the parameters such as prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and DIC score was higher in cases with severe injury than those with moderate injury. The mean platelet count was higher among cases with moderate brain injury than severe brain injury. The mean length of hospital stay was higher significantly among patients with severe brain injury and in patients with coagulopathy. Rate of morality was also higher among the patients with severe TBI.
